"Yes!", that would be an obvious answer of fashion designers, style magazines, models, fashion bloggers and movie stars. But the question here is what does fashion mean to us, ordinary people, who are not among 250 million employees of the fashion industry, but who have the luxury of time and money to choose what to wear?
What is fashion all about?
If you are not just that into fashion and don't want to dress to impress, you might not be satisfied to hear that people do get noticed because of the clothes they wear. After all, we are visual creatures who love to see something beautiful that will make an impact.
However, it's not always about the way someone looks. The role of fashion is not always to make us more attractive. It is through the personal style that we want to show how different, urban and interesting we are. We want clothes that fit our personality but don't exclude us from the crowd.
The fashion is global and unrestricted. It doesn't discriminate people based on their gender, race, religion, intelligence or profession. And although many people identify fashion with success, fame and social status, it's really available to everyone.
In the 21st century, the matter of style is more complex than ever. Fashion is not all about the clothes we wear anymore. But it's also the way we speak, the technology we use, the way we think and the way we live.
For some people, fashion is a priority. It helps them stand out from the crowd. To have a unique style is one of the rare chances for everyone to express creativity and to use imagination. It is the art anyone can participate in.
The downsides of the fashion industry
Even though immensely popular, it's no secret that fashion industry often leads to oppression, exaggeration, and obsession. It also puts some animals in danger. High heels are bad for health. And it is because of the fashion and style, that many girls suffer from anorexia and bulimia. Plastic surgery, dying of hair, solarium and all other unnecessary and dangerous things are connected to fashion trends in one way or the other.
With that in mind, we need to know our priorities and learn when to stop. After all, fashion is something we can live without.
In the defense of fashion and style
But even though we know fashion isn't necessary, imagine the world where everyone has the same hairstyle and wearing the same clothes. The diversity of everyday life would suffer. And the people, streets, and photographs would be tedious.
Unfortunately, there are parts of the world where the woman must wear identical clothes in public. They don't have free will. So they see fashion as a privilege that women in other countries have, but don't appreciate enough.
At the end, it's up to us
Maybe fashion is a hobby or the way of expressing uniqueness, but after all, it is a freedom of choice. And it's up to us whether or not we want to follow fashion trends, imitate once popular styles or to choose to ignore it all.
The style might not be the most important thing in the world, but we can't neglect its value in the modern world.
