Does Activated Charcoal Really Whiten Your Teeth? | Carbon Coco Review

The past couple of years have seen charcoal face masks, cleansers, detoxes, hangover preventions, and now teeth whiteners. Carbon Coco is a brand you are probably familiar with from Instagram. There tons of posts about it with most of them raving about how well it works. But is it worth the hype?

I was contemplating purchasing this product but lucky me, Carbo Coco contacted me and asked me to review their new Whitening Kit.

What Is it

Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent substance. It removes toxins when they adhere to the surface of the charcoal. It is not absorbed by the body, but passes through the GI system, so chemicals and toxins adhere to it, which then pass through the body and are expelled by the digestive system. Charcoal is “activated” when it is heated and/or exposed to specific gases. This process results in the creation of pores on the surface of the charcoal, which have the ability to trap certain particles. In the case of teeth whitening, the pores would be trapping and absorbing tannins, common stain-inducers found in wine and coffee.

What’s In it

The ingredient listed for this product is 100% Organic Coconut Shell Activated Charcoal with a hint of Bentonite Clay and Lemon Myrtle. It is supposed to help you whiten your teeth and is actually  great for your overall mouth health. Carbon Coco claims to help you reduce plaque, detoxify your mouth, promote healthy gums, freshen your breath, protect enamel and helps with future stains.

My Thoughts

I received the Whitening Kit that had the following:

  • A bamboo bristle toothbrush
  • The tooth charcoal powder
  • And toothpaste ( with activated charcoal and fluoride free )

How To Use it:

You dip your wet toothbrush into the powdered charcoal. Lean over the container of charcoal and quickly put the charcoal covered toothbrush in the mouth. This is to protect your sink. This stuff gets very messy. A little goes a long way so don’t overdo it. After softly brushing your teeth with the powder for 3-5  minutes, rinse your mouth well. You can then follow with the Carbon Coco toothpaste.

I noticed my teeth were squeaky clean and also slightly whiter. You won’t see a huge difference ( especially the first few days ) but the longer you use it the more it will become apparent that your teeth are a few shades whiter.

Worth The Hype?

  • Natural
  • Makes teeth whiter
  • Doesn’t leave a bad taste in your mouth
  • Fluoride free

  • Very Messy
  • Expensive ( the Ultimate Carbon Kit is at 43 euros )
  • Shipping might take a long time
  • A bit of the tooth polish gets stuck in the gums but not too noticeable (just floss prior to applying).

Overall , I think it is  great product. It definitely works the more you use it. I might be purchasing it after I’m through with the kit but the thing that really puts me off is the cleaning every time I use it.
